Paul Zawadzki

As a contemporary landscape painter Paul gets inspiration from a love of the local scenery near his home in the Waveney Valley, as well as uncompromising Suffolk shorelines and marshes and forest landscapes at Dunwich.

Much of his current output conveys his long emotional relationship with the eroding cliffs and fallen trees at Benacre and Covehithe on the north Suffolk coast.

He mainly paints in oils on canvas or wood panels, using a strong and vibrant colour palette, sometimes incorporating natural materials such as sawdust, sand and earth in his work to capture the texture of the landscape. There is a love of spontaneity and allowing the element of chance to guide his hand – he enthusiastically embraces the ‘happy accident’ and employs dripping, blotting, and expressive actions while retaining an element of traditional landscape painting visible in the finished piece.

Recent work involves painting on deliberately rusted steel or even recycled television glass, where the different surfaces present interesting challenges and unique textures. Paul says: “You must always enjoy what you do and not be precious about your work. The resulting composition emerges from these unpredictable beginnings, seemingly like magic!”.

As an artist and musician Paul also includes an element of synaesthesia in his work (colours and shapes are perceived from listening to music) which helps him in his other role as an electronic music composer.

Paul is an active member of several art groups – Easterly Artists, Norfolk & Norwich Art Circle (Chairman 2024), Harleston & Waveney Art Trail Collective, and Black Dog Arts, and exhibits regularly. He is currently represented by Stefania Carrozzini of Milan, taking part in exhibitions in New York, Paris, Venice and London.
